Hubbell & Hubbell is a collaborative firm of artists and architects that specializes in forms based on the beauty of nature and ecologically sound building practices. Led by the father and son team of artist James Hubbell and licensed-architect Drew Hubbell, the Hubbell studios strive to develop places that heal the soul and renew the spirit through organic design solutions.
Sensitivity to the environment, innovative design work and detailing makes the Hubbell & Hubbell studios unique among architectural firms. The firm’s diverse experience ranges from designing private residences using energy efficient materials, to a boulder-shaped ecological center in Tecate, Mexico, to international public art projects like the Pacific Rim Parks in China, Russia, San Diego, and Mexico.
The Hubbell architecture studio is dedicated to sustainable design solutions, and is known for their pioneering work in permitting straw bale structures in San Diego City and County. They are currently working on one of the first LEED-certified structures permitted though the City of San Diego.
“Blending the practicality of architecture with the beauty of art and nature into 'soul-stirring' cost and energy-efficient structures might seem noble yet unattainable, until one reviews the catalog of Hubbell projects: residences, schools, chapels, sculptures and mosaics." (Tia Blassingame, NY Arts Magazine, Jan/Feb 2004)
